Bold colors from the '80s are making a comeback, but in more subdued, elegant designs. This living room pairs bright blue and hot pink with black and white to keep the look sophisticated.

According to Emily Morrow, director of color, style and design at Shaw, Inc., our economy impacts our color preferences. Since we're in a recession, a lot of people want to incorporate tasteful shades that don't seem frivolous. Gray, which can have a very sober tone, is also incredibly sophisticated.

From runway to rugs to fabric, most of 2009's color trends have a silvery cast to them, including this arctic silvery blue. While it can be paired with saturated shades, like deep yellows or oranges, for a bold effect, the combination of white, cream and blue creates a pure, relaxing environment.

Rose is back in a big way: it's a safe approach to red if your design style isn't bright and bold. The warm, feminine tone provides the charming backdrop to this English country-styled bedroom.

The uplifting palette uses the cool red to add a sense of elegance, passion and rustic sophistication, while the bright green creates an organic, yet lively, richness to the space.

The rich yellow-green shade of olive is making a comeback from the '60s. However, this time around, it's paired with tones of khaki and stone for an earthy, grounded palette.

A timeless neutral, camel is perfect for providing a subdued backdrop to any space. When using such a basic shade, it's important to give the eye something to focus on, like the sky-blue paintings in this dining room.

Black is always in. Sophisticated and dramatic, black goes with any color, including the elegant merlot walls of this dining room. To keep the space from looking too dark, orange and pink curtains highlight the garden-view window.
