    Lime waxing

    Sand the floorboards using an industrial sander. Move across the grain with coarse sand paper and finish up with fine sand paper moving with the grain. Once finished rub liming wax into the boards to bring out the grain.
    Cupboard doors
    Storage
    Kids always need lots of storage space. Build a frame for the storage units and cover the sides with MDF. In the doors, cut out jigsaw piece shapes that interlock with each other. To finish prime the MDF before painting and sealing with acrylic varnish.
    Bean bags
    Seating
    Make triangular and square beanbags and matching cushions from hessian. Sew together and complete them with some dyed pom-pom trim.
    Sofa and curtains
    Fabric
    Cover the sofa in throws, which have been dyed to match the green and orange of the room. Put two different coloured throws on each half of the sofa. Use similar coloured muslin on the windows to provide some privacy.
    The desk area
    Office space
    Put a desk up against the wall and above it fix a metal grill where hooks, pens and notes can be hung from it.

    Spilt level flooring
    Spilt level flooring
    Build a split-level floor with a curved edge to create a natural divide in the room, between the play area and the sleeping area. Paint the exposed wood with diamond glaze varnish. Lay down carpet in the bedroom area to make it feel warm and cosy.
    Curvy border
    Brighten up the walls
    Paint the walls in two bright colours and separate with a wavy line. Split the two colours above eye level, as this is an effective way to make a room appear taller.
    Fold away beds
    Hide away beds
    To create more space buy fold away beds that lift onto the walls and can be pulled down as and when required. Build the wall out using MDF to make the beds flush with the walls.

    Fit the beds into the walls by building MDF panelling around the beds. This also produces more storage space. Fill in the gaps rounds the edges with plasterers filler before painting to match the walls.

    Install unusual shaped radiators that will not only keep the room warm, but double as a feature.
    Cosmic cone light
    Finishing touches
    Put up posters around the room. Add beanbags and a cosmic cone lamp, which will cast interesting light across the room to complete this childs bedroom.

    Paint the walls red to create a romantic cosy Oriental atmosphere in the bedroom.

    Paint a lantern with coat of dark emulsion and leave to dry. Add a light grey emulsion with a stippling brush. Dip the brush into a small amount of paint and using jabbing movements, go over the dark paint, creating a distressed effect.

    Use an oriental stamp with metallic paint to produce an Eastern look. Using a small roller, dab paint on the stamp, and then press firmly on the wall. Dont worry if the print is slightly faded, it gives an aged, textured look.

    Customise an economy lampshade by gluing Indian-styled jewels onto it. Fix the beads in place with a drop of glue. Choose rich red and pink shades to enhance the Eastern design.

    Make a prominent pelmet around the window and hang red curtains behind it for a rich feel.

    Attach a pole above the middle of the bed and by the wall and then drape a sari through the poles and hang behind the bed.

    Cover the bed with lots of cushions and use the bed for lounging on as well as sleeping in.

    Make some Eastern style night light holders. Paint the outside of a candle holder with red glass paint and finish with a touch of gold paint on the rim. To create a more unusual look, place some beads threaded on picture wire around the candle.

    Paint two walls dark red and two walls cream. Give the skirting boards a coat of green paint.
    The bed

    To give a bed an aged appearance, paint the wood red, add a light coat of furniture wax and finish with a green eggshell paint. Finally, rub down with wire wool, allowing the green to show through.
    Tracing a pattern

    Try embossing Celtic patterns onto metal panels. Enlarge a pattern and trace onto a thin brass sheet using a pen with no ink.

    Rub embossing fluid into the grooves of the pattern, highlighting the design. Make sure you wear gloves and that there is plenty of ventilation. These panels can then be used on boxes and inset into wardrobe doors.

    Create a Celtic light shade using a lamp ring and a drum made out of fencing wire. Use brightly coloured fire retardant ribbons to weave through the fencing and attach tassels to the bottom.

    Create a blanket with fringing and beads threaded to wire. Attach the beading to the blanket with quilting pins, so they can be easily removed for washing.
    Candle

    It is important to set the tone and mood of the bedroom by adding atmospheric lighting. Bedside lamps and candles work perfectly.
    Storage boxes

    Paint storage boxes the same colour as the walls using gloss paint. Attach embossed sheets of metal onto a few of the drawers using upholstery tacks to add variety.
    A circular mirror

    Make a mirror border from MDF and paint. When dry, stick a circular mirror to the border with strong adhesive. Finally attach two small wall candleholders to the MDF border.

    Paint the walls taupe and then add green vertical stripes down the walls. Paint the floor in the same taupe paint used for the walls and then carefully paint a leafy flower design in green.
    Fabric panels

    Make fabric panels by sewing off-cuts of fabric together. Use brown, green and taupe fabric, and weight the panels at the bottom with 10mm dowel. Attach to the wall using Velcro.
    The bed

    Dress the bed with a white linen set. Make a large cushion using the same green fabric. Decorate with dried leaf skeletons.
    Radiator cover
    Bedroom: Radiator cover
    Construct a radiator cover from 18mm MDF and drill holes in lines to allow the heat to escape. Continue the line of the radiator cover up to the ceiling. Paint in horizontal stripes of taupe, green and silver paint.
    Storage

    Decorate wooden wine crates in first paint and then strips of material. Continue the room themes by using the same green taupe and brown colours. Place under the clothes rail for additional storage.
    Window area

    Make an ottoman from 18mm MDF and paint brown. Add two small cushions made from leftover fabric. Place in the bay window. At the window make shutters from 2x1 batons. Back with fabric to allow maximum light through the window.
    Bedside table

    Make a bedside table by filling a traffic cone with plaster of Paris. Lightly sand down before placing a circular acrylic disk on the top.
    Light and mobiles

    Decorate the central light fitting by surrounding a 40cm circular paper shade with mobiles made from circles of frosted polypropylene and silver card.
    Willow decoration
    Bedroom: Final touches
    Make a bench for one wall from scaffolding planks and paint brown. Dress the room with willow objects and tank vases filled with ornamental cabbages.

    Start by fixing tongue and groove panelling to the wall above the bed. This will lift the eye and make the room feel larger. Paint brick red. Paint the remaining walls ochre and biscuit colour.
    Archway with seats

    If you have a dividing archway in eh room add interest to this and create seating and the same time. By using two simple curves, construct two seats perfect for children on each side of the archway one above the other.
    Padded headboard

    Use thick foam pieces to make a padded head and footboard. Cover the foam in red textured fabric and fix to the area above the bed at different depths.
    Patterned wardrobe

    Paint the wardrobe with a funky pattered design. Why not take inspiration from 1950s patterns and draw a circular design and colour it with mustard, brown and cream paints

    Cover the bed with natural coloured striped material. Liven up with handmade animal print cushions. Place two simple bedside lamps on each side of the bed for an air of sophistication.

    Enlarge photographs of family or friends on a photocopier. Using lazertran paper, transfer these images onto off-cuts of MDF, which have been painted black. They can be easily mounted using mounting spray.

    Make funky seating for the room. Start by dying a couple of bath mats dark brown. Then invest in large cubes of foam and cover these with the bath mats for hedgehog seating.

    Create a glamorous hanging bed frame using 18mm MDF suspended about 30cm from the ceiling by chrome chain. Add a decorative lightweight cornice to the outside of the MDF frame. Then paint the whole frame in the same cream as the walls.

    Drape curtains made from cream script fabric lined with satin, from each of the four corners to create a soft four-poster bed. Use the same cream script fabric to make a throw and cushions to match the curtains.
    Dog bed

    Why not indulge your pet and with a mini four-poster bed. Build an MDF box with 2"x2" uprights and a dado rail for the top frame. Again, use the script fabric for the corner drapes.
    Rose stencil design

    Upholster panels with wading and a stencil on natural linen. Try this elaborate rose design, created using five stencil sheets painted in layers to build up the final design. Use the wall colour paints and bronze and turquoise acrylics.
    Pewter-effect fireplace

    Remove the covering board and get the chimney professionally swept. Put in a second hand grate for coals or logs. Give the surround a classic aged look using a pewter effect kit, painting coats of black, grey and then silver paint.
    Light studded mirror

    Hinge together four second-hand doors to make a screen. Paint them with the grey wall colour. Dress a mirror in Hollywood style with bayonet lights studded around the frame.

    Make a simple floor to ceiling wardrobe in the corner of the room. An alcove is a perfect place for this. Make plain MDF doors and paint them the same colour as the walls.

    Nail wooden wine boxes upside down onto the wall to make legless bedside tables. Whitewash the boxes to blend in with the room.

    Make a throw out of towelling edged in plumb silk. Add floral prints to the room in the form of patchwork material. Try making patchwork tabs for the top of plain cream curtains and even a padded patchwork seat for under the window.
    Perspex photo frames

    Remove the backing paper from a piece of Perspex, except for a central square. Photocopy a photograph onto lazertran paper, soak in water until it becomes a transfer.

    Carefully slide the transfer onto the Perspex sheet and smooth to remove any air bubbles.
    Sea urchin candle holders

    Buy a sea urchin shell and block up the small hole in the bottom. Half fill the shell with plaster of Paris. Stick a candle in the centre of the plaster and leave to dry. When dry, remove the candle and replace with a fresh candle of your choice.
    Bead chandelier

    Light the room with a chandelier dressed with beads coloured with glass paints. Fill the fireplace with pebbles and light with white alter candles.

    For a minimal look, construct a large wardrobe and cupboard area to hide away all your clothes. In the central area, create deep shelves to house a TV and stereo. Paint the side of the shelves pink.

    Make a padded headboard out of 15 squares of 12mm MDF. Cover with foam pads followed by stretchy pink fleece. Mount the 15 squares on to a large sheet of MDF and fix firmly to the wall with screws.

    Stretch Shrink mirror over a 5 cm x 2.5 cm wooden frame and staple in place. Use a heat gun to make the material reflective. Suspend from the ceiling using strong cup hooks.
    Blackout curtains

    Stitch funky blackout curtains for the windows by simply using plain lining fabric. Hem the top with silver eyelet heading tape which has pre-cut chrome eye-lets and fastening eye-lets to fix the material.
    Handmade sculpture
    Handmade sculpture
    Build a plaster sculpture using dental alginate. Place hands in a bucket and pour alginate in around. Leave until set. Remove hands and pour in fine casting powder to fill the space left by the hands. Sand finely and paint white.

    Cover the work surfaces and units with a birch faced plywood and lacquer it to give a warm feel to the kitchen. A traditional pattern can be designed on the cupboard doors to match any existing decor.

    Cut out the wooden panels and fit glass panels into existing doors to help make the room feel lighter and more airy.

    A professional wooden floor can be created in a minimal amount of time by using small sections of laminate flooring with a self-adhesive back.

    Build open shelves and make a feature of your kitchen utensils. Build shelves into cubes and paint the same colour as the walls.

    Add accessories in light wood and metal that compliment the look and keep the room clean and modern.
