Jigsaw design storage Funky Citrus Playroom - Design Relax Room Trends 2009-2010

Flooring
Sand the floorboards using an industrial sander. Move across the grain with coarse sand paper and finish up with fine sand paper moving with the grain. Once finished rub liming wax into the boards to bring out the grain.

Storage
Kids always need lots of storage space. Build a frame for the storage units and cover the sides with MDF. In the doors, cut out jigsaw piece shapes that interlock with each other. To finish prime the MDF before painting and sealing with acrylic varnish.

Seating
Make triangular and square beanbags and matching cushions from hessian. Sew together and complete them with some dyed pom-pom trim.

Fabric
Cover the sofa in throws, which have been dyed to match the green and orange of the room. Put two different coloured throws on each half of the sofa. Use similar coloured muslin on the windows to provide some privacy.

Office space
Put a desk up against the wall and above it fix a metal grill where hooks, pens and notes can be hung from it.(BBC home design news)

Spilt level flooring
Build a split-level floor with a curved edge to create a natural divide in the room, between the play area and the sleeping area. Paint the exposed wood with diamond glaze varnish. Lay down carpet in the bedroom area to make it feel warm and cosy.

Brighten up the walls
Paint the walls in two bright colours and separate with a wavy line. Split the two colours above eye level, as this is an effective way to make a room appear taller.

Hide away beds
To create more space buy fold away beds that lift onto the walls and can be pulled down as and when required. Build the wall out using MDF to make the beds flush with the walls.

Panelling
Fit the beds into the walls by building MDF panelling around the beds. This also produces more storage space. Fill in the gaps rounds the edges with plasterers filler before painting to match the walls.

Funky radiator
Install unusual shaped radiators that will not only keep the room warm, but double as a feature.

Finishing touches
Put up posters around the room. Add beanbags and a cosmic cone lamp, which will cast interesting light across the room to complete this childs bedroom.(BBC home design news)

Bedroom: Red walls
Paint the walls red to create a romantic cosy Oriental atmosphere in the bedroom.

Bedroom: Pewter effect lantern
Paint a lantern with coat of dark emulsion and leave to dry. Add a light grey emulsion with a stippling brush. Dip the brush into a small amount of paint and using jabbing movements, go over the dark paint, creating a distressed effect.

Bedroom: Oriental look walls
Use an oriental stamp with metallic paint to produce an Eastern look. Using a small roller, dab paint on the stamp, and then press firmly on the wall. Dont worry if the print is slightly faded, it gives an aged, textured look.

Bedroom: Light shade
Customise an economy lampshade by gluing Indian-styled jewels onto it. Fix the beads in place with a drop of glue. Choose rich red and pink shades to enhance the Eastern design.

Bedroom: Curtains
Make a prominent pelmet around the window and hang red curtains behind it for a rich feel.

Bedroom: Sari canopy
Attach a pole above the middle of the bed and by the wall and then drape a sari through the poles and hang behind the bed.

Bedroom: Decorate the bed
Cover the bed with lots of cushions and use the bed for lounging on as well as sleeping in.

Bedroom: Finishing touches
Make some Eastern style night light holders. Paint the outside of a candle holder with red glass paint and finish with a touch of gold paint on the rim. To create a more unusual look, place some beads threaded on picture wire around the candle.(bbc home design news)

Bedroom: Celtic colours
Paint two walls dark red and two walls cream. Give the skirting boards a coat of green paint.

Bedroom: Old looking bed
To give a bed an aged appearance, paint the wood red, add a light coat of furniture wax and finish with a green eggshell paint. Finally, rub down with wire wool, allowing the green to show through.

Bedroom: Celtic patterns
Try embossing Celtic patterns onto metal panels. Enlarge a pattern and trace onto a thin brass sheet using a pen with no ink.

Bedroom: Embossed sheets
Rub embossing fluid into the grooves of the pattern, highlighting the design. Make sure you wear gloves and that there is plenty of ventilation. These panels can then be used on boxes and inset into wardrobe doors.

Bedroom: Lampshade with ribbons
Create a Celtic light shade using a lamp ring and a drum made out of fencing wire. Use brightly coloured fire retardant ribbons to weave through the fencing and attach tassels to the bottom.

Bedroom: Designer curtains
Create a blanket with fringing and beads threaded to wire. Attach the beading to the blanket with quilting pins, so they can be easily removed for washing.

Bedroom: Decorative lighting
It is important to set the tone and mood of the bedroom by adding atmospheric lighting. Bedside lamps and candles work perfectly.

Bedroom: Small storage boxes
Paint storage boxes the same colour as the walls using gloss paint. Attach embossed sheets of metal onto a few of the drawers using upholstery tacks to add variety.

Bedroom: Ornamental mirror
Make a mirror border from MDF and paint. When dry, stick a circular mirror to the border with strong adhesive. Finally attach two small wall candleholders to the MDF border.(BBC home design news)

Bedroom: Window decoration
Make an ottoman from 18mm MDF and paint brown. Add two small cushions made from leftover fabric. Place in the bay window. At the window make shutters from 2x1 batons. Back with fabric to allow maximum light through the window.

Bedroom: Bedside table
