Wall colour
Paint the kitchen bright white and add splashes of copper-orange paint in a bar code pattern to contrast against the white and highlight the breakfast bar.

The fireplace
Clean the inner walls of the fireplace and treat with heat resistant bitumen before applying the plaster, and bring the brickwork into relief with white masonry paint.

The splash back
Tile the work-surfaces using small white mosaic squares inset with larger coloured resin tiles, these complement the painted squares and circles used throughout the rest of the room.

The breakfast bar
Install a breakfast bar. Place a mirror on the wall above it to create the illusion of size and buy tall stools to reflect the US style.

Curtain
Thread plastic shiny beads onto long pieces of plastic thread and hang from the top of the window for interest and help prevent people looking into the kitchen.

Chrome detailing
Finish off the modern look by adding chrome touches throughout such as metal handles for the cabinet doors and accessories.

Accessories

Design Cool Contemporary Kitchen Online - Design Kitchen Trends 2009 - 2010: Co-ordinate your dinning area with your kitchen by using a simple design throughout. For a less cluttered kitchen use cool fresh colours. Blues, turquoise and white work well with a pale beech block worktop.

Design Kitchen Trends: Bright fresh walls
Paint the walls turquoise. Use a complimentary colour as an accent colour and paint small objects around the room in this colour. Here a deeper blue works well as the accent colour.

Design Kitchen Trends: Herbs and spices feature
Make your herbs and spices into a feature of the room by displaying them in smart glass jars with chrome lids rather than tins. Paint the spice rack in the chosen accent colour.

Design Kitchen Trends: Kitchen cabinets
A cheap alternative to buying new cabinets is to paint the existing ones a different colour. Prime the units and then paint in the new colour. Add interest by attaching fretwork in the accent colour to the bottom of the cabinets.

Design Kitchen Trends: Kitchen table
Paint the kitchen table a similar shade to the walls and use the accent colour as a border on the table. Once the main colour is painted and dry, carefully mask out the border roughly 5cm in from the edge and paint it dark blue.

Design Kitchen Trends: Curtains
You need to keep as much light in a room as possible. Use thin white muslin curtains to achieve this. An easy way to smarten up plain curtains is to buy a small amount of a coloured fabric and simply edge the curtains with it.

Design Kitchen Trends: Silver tile transfers
Soak the transfers in water for a few seconds, peel off the back and gently place on a tile. Use a damp cloth to press out the air bubbles. Chrome cupboard handles also add style and a contemporary feel to the revamped kitchen units.

Design Kitchen Trends: Chairs covers
Update old chairs by re-covering the seats. Use a plastic material, which is easy to wipe clean. Pull it round the seat and fix using a staple gun or glue.

Design Kitchen Trends: Corner shelves
Check the angle of the corner. The best way to do this is, is to make a paper template and use it to cut out a triangular shelf from MDF. Prime and paint in the usual manner and fix onto the wall using shelf brackets.(bbc home design news)

Bold colors from the '80s are making a comeback, but in more subdued, elegant designs. This living room pairs bright blue and hot pink with black and white to keep the look sophisticated.

According to Emily Morrow, director of color, style and design at Shaw, Inc., our economy impacts our color preferences. Since we're in a recession, a lot of people want to incorporate tasteful shades that don't seem frivolous. Gray, which can have a very sober tone, is also incredibly sophisticated.

From runway to rugs to fabric, most of 2009's color trends have a silvery cast to them, including this arctic silvery blue. While it can be paired with saturated shades, like deep yellows or oranges, for a bold effect, the combination of white, cream and blue creates a pure, relaxing environment.
.jpg)
Rose is back in a big way: it's a safe approach to red if your design style isn't bright and bold. The warm, feminine tone provides the charming backdrop to this English country-styled bedroom.
.jpg)
Hide CaptionShow CaptionThe classic spring color palette of pink and green is updated for 2009 with shades of lime and fuchsia. The uplifting palette uses the cool red to add a sense of elegance, passion and rustic sophistication, while the bright green creates an organic, yet lively, richness to the space.
.jpg)
The reflective quality of a metallic sheen gives sophisticated gray a renewed chic look. When paired with white trim and furnishings, the sleek hue remains clean, simple and serene.
.jpg)
The rich yellow-green shade of olive is making a comeback from the '60s. However, this time around, it's paired with tones of khaki and stone for an earthy, grounded palette.
.jpg)
A timeless neutral, camel is perfect for providing a subdued backdrop to any space. When using such a basic shade, it's important to give the eye something to focus on, like the sky-blue paintings in this dining room.

Black is always in. Sophisticated and dramatic, black goes with any color, including the elegant merlot walls of this dining room. To keep the space from looking too dark, orange and pink curtains highlight the garden-view window.

For a natural look floor without the hassle of sanding boards or laying laminate flooring, try wood effect vinyl. Soft underfoot, easy to maintain and most importantly easy and cheap to lay.

Design Bathroom Trends: Light

Design Bathroom Trends: Infrastructure
The first job in any room is to deal with the infrastructure of the whole space. Ensure that the floor is secure and level. If necessary, rip up broken flooring and screw down new boards. Ensure the walls are sound, and the window recesses made good.

Design Bathroom Trends: Divide the space
Divide the space into two to allow the bathroom to be inset into the left hand corner of the room, leaving room for an access corridor on the inner wall and a simple white walled studio.

Design Bathroom Trends: Glass and mirror partition
Make a tongue and groove partition to divide the bathroom from the other spaces. On one side, leave rectangular cavities for glass and mirror panels. On the other side, add shelving and small spotlights.

Design Bathroom Trends: Colour
Paint the bathroom and the corridor with a deep yellow paint. Colour-wash for a textured finish - keep your brush moving in many different directions as this will create an uneven finish. Paint the ceiling white and inset a series of chrome spotlights.

Design Bathroom Trends: Tiles
Lay special raised ceramic tiles on the bathroom floor. In one corner of the room, put down white shower tiles with a simple patterned strip ready for a funky chrome and glass moulded shower cabinet.

Design Bathroom Trends: Furniture
To give this room a luxurious feel, invest in high quality furniture. Choose a porcelain toilet with a solid wood limed oak seat. Position two his and hers Victorian style basins in front of tall mirrors.

Design Bathroom Trends: The bath
To enhance the feel of this room, go for a fabulous roll top double-ended bath with cast iron traditional feet. This ties in perfectly with the Victorian theme and creates a space perfect for relaxation.

Design Bathroom Trends: Heated towel rail
Install a heated towel rail against one wall to ensure you always have a warm towel ready for when you climb out of the shower.

Design Bathroom Trends: Finishing touches
As a finishing touch, dress the room with leafy green plants as well as luxury bathroom accessories.
