Home & garden design - Victorian - Style Home
27 May 2009
Host Joan Kohn visits Sally Menesis’ classic 1800s Victorian home, which was updated to include a new master suite fashioned from several smaller rooms.
An addition over the kitchen added space with a large bay window that was used for the new bath.
The master bedroom gets a warm, romantic feel from floral textiles, a trellis pattern wallpaper, creamy colors, soft lighting and wood flooring.
- The bedroom borrowed space from an adjacent small bedroom when a wall was knocked out. The former bath was converted into a hall leading to the new bathroom and a large walk-in closet.
- Mismatched antiques are used throughout the bedroom to take the newness out of the room.

- Period touches in the bath include white beadboard wainscoting, two pedestal sinks, a claw-foot tub and brass reproduction faucets.
- The focal point of the bathroom is a claw-foot tub positioned in front of the bay windows.
- The bath gets its light and airy feeling from a clean white color palette, a vaulted ceiling and ceiling fan, and a circle window placed high on the wall.
- A pedestal sink is located on either side of the tub for separate preparation areas. The toilet is separated from other areas by a half wall.
- The large shower, finished with ceramic tiles that look like tumbled marble, has a generous bench and a seamless glass enclosure for a spacious look and feel.
- Period touches in the suite include beadboard wainscoting, and thick moldings and window trim that match that in the rest of the home. (HGTV home and garden news)
Home & garden design - Oceanfront Design
26 May 2009

Originally a lodge, the home’s choppy floor plan was shifted to combine smaller rooms into fewer, larger rooms. Designer Olivia Sanderson used two bedrooms, a bath and a fire escape to create the new second floor master suite, which runs the entire width of the house.
The cottage-style bedroom uses a fresh blue and white color scheme but relies on ocean views for a focal point.
- A casual cottage style was chosen for the master suite. White walls with beadboard wainscoting, whitewashed wood furniture, lightly stained pine flooring and hooked area rugs set the light and airy tone. Stars adorn the sheer white curtains and comfortable upholstered chairs, while shells are scattered on the area rug. Blue accents, reminiscent of the sea, add punch.
- Two small windows were removed and an entire side wall of windows was installed, finished at one end with patio doors leading to the deck and ocean views.
- A former fire escape was transformed into the seating area with an octagonal shape, vaulted ceiling and hot air balloon chandelier.
- Pine flooring was left uncarpeted for ease of maintenance. Area rugs are easily cleaned of sand.
- A second seating area at one end of the room doubles as a dressing space in front of the closets. It features comfortable chairs and a dressing table.

- Rubbed blue cabinetry and an English style pedestal sink carry the cottage look into the bath.
- The bathroom was formerly a small bedroom. It features an English pedestal sink, a fiberglass tub unit, nonskid ceramic flooring and a rubbed blue finish on the wood cabinetry. Narrow beadboard is used for the wainscoting. (Hgtv home garden style)
Home & garden design - Garden-Style Kitchen

Gayle Tweed finds the calming green and cream color scheme of her garden-style country kitchen to be the perfect end-of-day antidote to her stimulating job as an antiques dealer.

Homeowner Gayle Tweed painted the original open shelving a creamy white, which became the perfect backdrop for her collection of green dishes and picnic tins. Timeworn country antiques serve a variety of purposes in the small space. Tweed has artfully arranged her serving pieces and an assortment of kitchen necessities within her open shelving.

A small dresser acts as a buffet and in the middle of the kitchen, a drop-leaf table is used for an island. She installed copper countertops to complement the green and cream color palette and plans to let it patina naturally. Although there are products that could prevent the copper from oxidizing, Tweed has chosen to let hers achieve a natural patina. Accents include large glass jars with painted lids and plates displayed on the wall.

The hanging lamp over the breakfast table is nothing more than an electrical cord, light bulb and lampshade. She covered the shade with fabric and fringe and created a fabric slipcover to hide the cord. A fabric-and-fringe-covered lampshade accentuates the room's eclectic country design.

On a wooded enclave not far from downtown Portland, Estelline O'Harra and Nance Schaefle turned a 1940s farmhouse into a rustic, lodge-style home.
On a wooded enclave not far from downtown Portland, Estelline O'Harra and Nance Schaefle turned a dilapidated 1940s farmhouse into a rustic, lodge-style home. Although this style is prevalent in the Pacific Northwest it's not where it originated. The roots of this look go back to the early 1900s vacation lodges of upstate New York's Adirondack Mountains.

- Before
They've outfitted their living room with traditional Adirondack-inspired furniture and accessories. The distinctive style is characterized by natural materials, like leather and wool, and rustic furniture made from the trunk, bark and branches of local trees. They've also brought in mission and arts-and-crafts style pieces to complement the lodge look. Wicker pieces are also used throughout for additional texture.
The Adirondack-style space is filled with furniture inspired by nature.

A classic farmhouse kitchen is given a contemporary cottage look by a young couple in the small town of Dublin, New Hampshire.

Jocie Sinaur and David Chicane wanted a kitchen that was easy to maintain and cook in their first home.
The old English pine farm table in the center of the kitchen serves as a useful island. A chest underneath provides a display and storage space for mixing bowls and utensils.
The clean white styling and rich antique furnishings and collections combine for a clean country look. Many of the accessories are functional and used for storing food and kitchen tools.

The light white backdrop in the dining room is accomplished with antique French linens and light yellow-painted chairs. Antique silver candleholders and napkin rings add sparkle to the simple space.

Home & garden design - Old Farmhouse Remodeled With Inexpensive Design Ideas

- They removed a wall between the parlor and dining area because of the abundance of natural light in the small space. Now, the large room is light, bright and airy.
- Instead of replacing the worn floor with carpet, they installed lower-grade lumber for an old-fashioned look. The knots and imperfections only add to the aura of the home.
- An old porch railing was reconfigured into a corner piece to delineate the living area from the dining room.

- The homeowners constructed their own coffee table using a leaded glass window for a hinged top. Antique quilts are stored inside.
- Instead of making fabric-covered buttons, she secured a valance over door stops with rubber bands.

- A mosaic tile floor was installed in the small spare bathroom. In order to save counter space, they angled the sink and faucetry in the far corner of the dresser vanity.
- All of the furniture is slipcovered for a shabby chic look. A combination of antique sheets, tablecloths and ticking reinforce the vintage look.( Hgtv home garden style)
Home & garden design - Mediterranean-Style Master Suite
26 May 2009
BeforeWhen Janet Bramson and David Hagen got married and combined their households two years ago, David moved into the four-bedroom '70s ranch-style home Janet had purchased years earlier.
AfterThey've already redecorated several rooms of the house, but now they say they'd like some professional help in designing a luxurious space for just the two of them. They want to tackle their master bath and bedroom suite. Without knowing how to start this huge project, they are in need of interior designers.
BeforeAfter meeting with all the designers, Janet and David choose Martin Casteran and Jerome Huffschmidt to transform their master bath. Now rich tiles cover the floor and walls, and a double sink vanity looks like an antique dresser.
AfterThe mirrors have lights that come through the glass, and a large tub is the focal point that looks out to the patio. It makes the bathroom part of the outdoors and expands the space tremendously. The couple's new space is like a five-star hotel bathroom with a relaxing spa feel.

Home & garden design - Georgia Arts-and-Crafts Style Home
26 May 2009

This homeowner was eager to begin restoring her historic home, which had fallen into disrepair after going unoccupied for decades. The home required numerous repairs, including fixes for water damage and termite infestation.

- Before, front

- Before, library

- After, library
The main structure of the home was intact, but water, termites and aging took quite a toll. The focus of the restoration was on repairing the roof and walls, preserving the woodwork and organ, and updating select areas. The exterior was freshened with new stucco. Inside, the floors and woodwork were refinished, and the kitchen and breakfast area were updated with modern appliances. The restored music room and library are both highlights of the transformation.
