  • 2009-2010 Home design style - Dining Room With Cottage Garden Style

    09 June 2009

    • The walls are given a graphic punch with a fun paint technique. Wahl creates square "friskets" — clear protective overlays — out of Con-Tact paper and adheres them to the wall to create a faux dentil molding. She paints the walls a raspberry color, then removes the friskets to reveal the original light green base coat underneath.
    • The dining chairs are enhanced with floral slipcovers. Wahl creates a second tabletop out of birch and paints a colorful floral design on top. Rubber mats are placed in between the two tops to stabilize the new one. The perimeter of the original tabletop is hidden behind a piece of painted canvas stapled to the new painted top.
    • New floral shades dress up the chandelier.
    • A piece of remnant linoleum is painted for a fun floorcloth. Wahl applies several coats of a clear sealer to protect the design.
    • Checkered wallpaper is applied to the backs of the china cabinets to help them blend in better with the new colorful design.
    • Storage comes in the form of a painted chest. Wahl paints an old dark chest with coordinating colors and adds black shelf brackets and a quartered fence post for the legs.
    Before
  • A decorative wrought-iron accent and a painted design behind it add whimsy to one wall.
  • Craft boxes are covered in leftover wallpaper to create decorative but functional storage.

  • 2009-2010 Home design style - Shingle-Style Home

    09 June 2009

Designer Sally Weston used different woods and glass finishes for cabinets for an unmatched, evolved looked. Adjacent spaces with specific functions easily flow into each other in the open plan.

Warm pine cabinets and honed granite countertops give this large kitchen a time-worn appeal.

    • The kitchen area is made up of a series of uniquely functioning spaces. In addition to the main work area is a large butler’s panty and a smaller baking pantry. Facing the island on one side is the dining area with banquette, and on the other is a coffee bar and massive planter with natural stone counter and copper faucet.
    • Different woods were combined in the large kitchen for its charming and comfortable look. The main cabinets and island are made from honey-colored Pennsylvania pine. They use both seeded and hammered glass for upper cabinet panels. Lighter colored wood for specific pieces avoids a built-in look. The cabinets in the butler’s pantry are mahogany topped with bird’s eye maple. The baking pantry, coffee bar and planter use white wood cabinetry topped with marble. The flooring is 100-year-old reclaimed heart pine.
    • The formal butler’s pantry has a large farm sink, a warming drawer and dishwasher, as well as ample storage.
    • The large island looks out into the family room, so interaction between the cook and others is easy and natural. The family room is surrounded with windows on three sides.

The large dual-level granite-topped island houses a round stainless steel prep sink and a professional cooktop.

The unusual-shaped sink has an elongated end and a round end for maximum function.

  • 2009-2010 Home design style - Asian-Style Interior

    09 June 2009

Designer Ivan Beardsley's home is typical of a lot of houses that were built during the late 1940s and 1950s. The California ranch-style home is only about 1,100 square feet but he's made it seem much bigger with a just a few tricks. In the living room, he took the doorways up to the ceiling and cut the doors in half to give them more presence. The furnishings are modern and sleek and instead of a traditional sofa, table and chair arrangement, he's used two pairs of matching chairs that seem to float around a glossy center table.

The sweeping shape of the unusual shelving space running underneath the window makes the room feel larger.

The entry into the kitchen and dining area is defined with a purple painted column that is actually a Sonotube, a cardboard column used to form concrete pillars. It helps to visually increase the height of the ceiling and adds a burst of color not found in either room. Instead of remodeling the kitchen, he stayed true to its character by keeping the original tile and stove intact.

Beardsley doesn't have a grand-scale dining room so he turned a patio into a fully-functioning entertaining space. Draperies and mosquito netting are drawn closed when the sun gets too hot. The console in the back is made of poured concrete.

  • 2009-2010 Home design style - French-Style Decor

    09 June 2009

Designer Linda Fujimoto loves anything artist-made, French or antique and her house is a great display case for each of her great finds. The living room is a perfect example of an inviting garden-style sunroom. The crisp colors in the wallpaper set the lively tone; the flooring consists of Mexican paver tiles that only get better with age. An old gate has been fashioned into a coffee table with the addition of iron legs and glass top. The loveseat is covered with a bedspread that's been sewn into a slipcover.

Her personal touch is evident the moment one steps in the door and sees the stained and stenciled staircase. A harlequin design on the walls complements her artistic touch.

The bistro-style kitchen contains marble counters, a buttery color on the walls and large-scale antique island. To bridge the marble to the cabinets, Fujimoto installed crown molding and faux painted it to resemble the countertop. The wood floor is painted with a blue and white harlequin pattern for additional texture and color. The white diamonds were sponged with the blue color to tone down the contrast.

The master bedroom is alive with color, pattern and drama with black carpet, floral rugs and layer of pillows on the bed. Dressmaker details abound with dress forms and mannequins used for decorating.

The closet doors are enhanced with ceramic knobs and gold paint on the inside edges to coordinate with other gilded elements in the space.

The downstairs bathroom was once all white from the ceiling to the floor. Fujimoto transformed the space with several coats of porch paint and greeting card and wallpaper cutouts decoupaged onto nearly every surface.

  • 2009-2010 Home design style - Tropical-Style Retreat

    09 June 2009
    After

Artist and author Eyvette Jones already has a lot of colorful, interesting furnishings and accessories, she just needs a cohesive look to bring all of the pieces together into a tropical retreat.

    The Dilemma

    Before

Host Kristan Cunningham and design coordinators Spencer Anderson and Dave Sheinkopf hope to make her wishes come true by introducing color, reworking the existing furniture, adding dramatic lighting, adding more storage and showcasing her art.

    The Solution

    After

The design transforms the living space into an inviting, island-style getaway — here's how they do it:

    • The walls are painted peacock blue-green to start the Tropical theme.
    • Anderson transforms the existing pine armoire with a coat of black paint. After it dries, he sands it down for an aged appearance.
  • Sheinkopf builds a pine hutch to go on top of the existing storage piece. He adds a crown detail to the top and face-frames the piece with pine molding. After he paints the piece black, he cuts matchstick blinds to fit the back and adds bamboo poles to the sides to tie it in with the other tropical elements in the room. He also sands down the painted finish to match the armoire.
  • Anderson creates two pedestals for Jones' African sculptures. He constructs the stands out of pine boards with mitered edges and tapers them towards the top. A light fixture mounted to a wood block is placed inside each pedestal with the wires coming through the bottom. A piece of glass on each stand allows the light to showcase the sculptures.
  • The permanently-affixed wall sconces are camouflaged with burlap and palm leaves. The burlap is hot-glued directly to the sconce and a palm leaf is hot-glued on top of the burlap.
  • Furnishings purchased for the space include a new fan with palm blades, wicker baskets for additional storage, two rattan chairs for a separate seating area and a white slipcover for the existing sofa.
  • Sheer gauze is used to bring a wispy look to the windows; bamboo poles are used for window rods.
  • A tropical-style print is used for new pillow coverings, which injects a tropical flair onto the white slipcovered sofa.

  • 2009-2010 Home Design - Arts-and-Crafts Style Kitchen Renovation

    09 June 2009
Burnished wood, contrasted with deep green granite counters, is the centerpiece in this arts-and-crafts kitchen renovation.

When Arno Grether renovated the outdated kitchen in his California style bungalow, his goal was to create an efficient, beautiful space that remains faithful to the arts-and-crafts sensibility of the rest of the home. The brand-new kitchen combines custom-built wood cabinets with commercial stainless steel appliances for a craftsman design with a new upscale look.

The arts-and-crafts style is evident in the dining room that is filled with period Stickley furniture, geometric glass and metal lighting, and a collection of colorful pottery.
Professional-grade stainless steel appliances blend beautifully with Douglas fir cabinets.
    • The kitchen is open to the dining room and family room. To create cohesion among the spaces, similar materials were used throughout, like the oak flooring and Douglas fir cabinetry, all stained the same warm cinnamon color.
    • To make the kitchen larger, space was borrowed from what used to be the maid’s bedroom and bath. The new space accommodates a large island and coffee bar.
    • To offset all the wood cabinetry, a hallmark of the arts-and-crafts style, cool green granite and stainless steel were chosen for counters and appliances.
    • The large kitchen feels open and airy with patio doors to the outside and shared light from the large family room beyond. The family room uses the same cabinetry as the kitchen and features a barrel wood ceiling and antique wooden beams.

  • 2009 2010 Design Style for Bathroom

    09 June 2009
World style refers to design that reflects a timeless European sensibility.

Host Joan Kohn learns about the elements of Old World style for the bath from experts Michael Gillick and Gil Shapiro of Urban Archeology. The outstanding characteristics of this style are the sense of history, the grandness of space, and feeling of comfort it gives to this most private of rooms.

A gracious sense of space and a commanding architectural presence are typical of Old World style.
It is easy to add natural materials to a bath, like this wood cabinet with stone top retrofitted as a vanity.
This vanity, designed to look like a furniture piece, has ornate hand-carved woodwork that gives a stately, graceful feel to the room.
    • Old World style often starts with the bones of the room: the architecture. Detailed ceilings and woodwork, period windows, columns and arches create a grand shell.
    • This style relies on natural elements with timeless appeal, notably wood and stone, which can used for any or all surfaces. This translates into wood cabinets, flooring and elaborate wood trim, and stone tiles and slabs used for flooring, walls and countertops. There are no traces of manufactured surfaces like stainless steel or laminate.
    • Stone surfaces can be polished and pristine, or they can be honed and distressed for a comfortable time-worn look. Tumbled marble and ceramic tiles with a crackled finish and irregular edges are perfect choices.
    • Walls, furniture and accessories with a distressed or faux finish are wonderful companions to the natural surfaces.
    • The grandness of the space encourages luxurious touches like hanging oversized mirrors and displaying or hanging lots of towels. Even the newly fashionable large shower heads, popular 100 years ago, are in keeping with the large-scale feel.
    • By tiling a modern whirlpool tub, it gets an Old World look.
    • The choice of lighting is important. Sconces and chandeliers with metal finishes are more appropriate than recessed cans.
