2009-2010 home design style-Fantastic Faux Finishes-Faux Finish, Murals, Stenciling-

Stylish and fashionable, with a little imagination faux finishes can be downright fun.

In this comfy wine cellar, an ancient brick wall appears to be peaking out from where a more modern covering of plaster and paint was applied. Rough surface ceramic tiles used on the counter create a visual bond between genuine and faux. Like a doorway to a magical land, this hallway appears to morph into a softly lit field of tall grasses and waving bulrushes. Birds aren't the only ones to land on the branches of two majestic trees hidden just out of sight. When it's dark, fairies too flutter across the landscape – but they are shy creatures often only visible to very young eyes.

It's always summer time in this whimsical orchard. Trees are laden with bunches of luscious, juicy cherries – one has even fallen on the curtain where it now holds back the fabric to better showcase the rich texture of the scarlet wall behind it.

Let your imagination soar with this trio of faux finished walls that prove the old adage, one picture - or in this case one painting - is worth a thousand words.

Ready to explore the lands beyond? This alcove becomes a gateway to new explorations and adventures. A winding path vanishes into the distance like a silent invitation for those of this world to discover what might lie hidden in the mountain passes and valleys on the horizon. Soft, leafy willow tendrils, apparently part of the world beyond, frame the doorway as if not quite able to contain their curiosity about the people who inhabit our earth.

Ahoy thar matey. Best have your compass set and keep your eye on the horizon, because this wild, windswept beauty can be treacherous to those who fail to respect her majesty. Thankfully, a patient lighthouse keeper mans his solitary post day and night ensuring all who sail past stay safe and sound and well able to continue their voyage.

Like moving between past and present, this arched doorway blends the rustic warmth of a Mediterranean wine cellar with crisp modernity. Here walls appear to morph into the stone-like kitchen flooring and Tiffany-style lamps rub shoulders with contemporary pendant lighting. Tying it all together is the rich, luxurious texture of natural, dark stained wood.

2009-2010 home design style-It's All in the Details

When it comes to life: don't sweat the small stuff. When it comes to your home, often it's the small things that matter most – like architectural details.

Deceptive in its simplicity, this window's unadorned façade is offset by wood and brick to become an integrated, geometric whole. A double gabled roofline on one side creates a balanced end point to the house, a sense of completeness. Angular detailing on the chimney top subtly echoes the shapes below.

Like a magic house of mirrors, this dramatic entryway appears to go on forever changing patterns and adornments but always maintaining its graceful arch. On guard in front, a spiny sentry flanked by four junior cacti stands proudly in a sandy island surrounded by inlaid brick walkway – the geometric design a striking contrast to the graceful arches beyond.

Symmetry reigns supreme at this front door. Matched pairs of terra cotta planters and wrought iron carriage lanterns appear as punctuation points on the surround's smooth, limestone tiles. Richly stained, double doors hint at welcoming coolness just beyond. Even nature has been tamed with twin topiary trees and sunny yellow flowers carefully balanced and meticulously shaped on either side.

2009-2010 home design style-Like Life, Architecture is All About the Details

Imposing and imaginative, there's still a touch of whimsy to this log home's grand entryway. On a different scale, this could be the entry to a hobbit home. On the human scale, there's a sense of solidity, of being firmly planted in the ground. Support beams appear to be living trees still growing from the ground. Slate steps give a sense of motion – like a stream emanating from within.

Free flowing form, eclectic window shapes and sizes, plus irregular stone in variegated colors give this upper floor exterior an intriguing, woodsy charm. An oversized, circular chimney with large, concrete slab cap creates a visual focus and anchors all the other aspects together.

A balcony for all seasons, this outdoor space is protected from the rains by a dramatic overhang. Lined with teak strips, there is a visual warmth to this practical detail. Yet there is a sense of elegance too, a sense of lightness in the delicate, angular shaping of the roof itself and the metal supports extending from the matched columns. Narrow door panels add a further layer of visual texture.

It’s time to put your feet up, grab popcorn and a movie, chill out. And you’ll have no problem forgetting the cares of the day in this rustic, family retreat.

Windows and ledgestone fireplace soar a full two storeys enhancing the airy sense of volume that gives this room much of its character. Window casings are large, natural stained timber matching the ceiling beams and floating fireplace mantel while creating visual connectivity with the mature forest just outside. Perhaps on a moonlit night, lovers might be seen silhouetted behind the wrought iron Juliet balconies to a spacious master suite above.

Seating is plush, accented with a plethora of multi-textured toss cushions. The spiky, tousled look of potted ferns and succulents is quietly echoed in the patterning on one sofa’s fabric leaving the second to introduce a soft, unadorned simplicity.

Bringing a sparkle of metallic sheen, draperies cascade to the floor where they spread with carefree grace across the hardwood floor. A tasseled, silken cord loops around a gilt tieback button – the barest hint of traditional formality.

2009-2010 home design style-Family Rooms-Urban Stone and Pine Paradise

Richly stained woods, natural stone, and potted succulents give a warm, rustic tone to this contemporary great room retreat. Millwork is lavish wrapping itself floor-to-ceiling around two sides and incorporating art niches, storage, a built-in computer desk, and wide-screen television. The distressed wood’s many knots and visual imperfections create a comfortable contrast to sophisticated use of crown molding and glass inserts.

Above, the pseudo barn roof is inset with pot lights and dramatic ceiling paper in a stylized brocade pattern. In one corner, a rock fireplace and hearth are framed by symmetric bookshelves and wood columns. Greenery sprawls casually across the mantel with errant tendrils cascading over the edge as if descending down a mountain slope.

As ready for entertaining as for the joys of daily living, the kitchen area draws inspiration from the wood and stone of its adjoining space. Cabinets are of the same wood but are interspersed with stone backsplash, painted wall, and sunny window. Highlighted with ceiling paper, an arched valance above the sink creates an effortless visual flow between the great room’s two distinct areas. And to provide a touch of fun-loving sassiness, two wrought iron chairs are pulled up at the eating bar just in time for a quick get-me-on-the-go snack.

You never know where a staircase may lead - especially when they're as charming and exotic as this trio.

Multiple vaults with accent lighting and a sunny display niche create a mini art gallery with distinctly outdoor theme. Luxuriously stained treads and flooring could have as easily been hewn from the forest just outside as from the whimsical woodlands suspended on the landing wall - or perhaps they are, in fact, the same scene merely viewed through marched arches by a different pair of eyes. Only the mysterious stone lady knows for sure. Elegant in white and wood tones, this stairway speaks of a gracious, cool tranquility. The curves of a twinkling chandelier above are echoed in wrought iron railing accents and, even more discreetly, in the doorway's leaded glass. Pause for just a moment and you may hear the whisper silk and taffeta dresses coming from above.

Indulge your imagination when you climb this floating tread stairway. Like a memory of the ultimate treehouse for the young and young at heart, there's a magical ambiance here. 2009-2010 home design style - Entries, Halls, Stairways, Railings - Dress Up Your Hallways and Entries

Drawing inspiration from the earth tones of southwest heritage, this hallway centers on a wrought iron table topped with rich, dark stone. A trio of glass accent pieces - two vases and a bowl - introduce a gentle sheen and unexpected visual texture to offset the roughness of square slate floor tiles. Above, a pair of silhouettes harken back to days when cowboys were an everyday sight and riding the range was an honored profession.

A mini glimpse of the wonders found below the seas, this circular aquarium provides an ever-changing centerpiece filled with undulating motion and soft, ambient lighting during nighttime hours. The stone pedestal and black, metallic top are of simple, uncomplicated design to balance the interplay between the rocks and plants where colorful fish play hide-and-seek.

A small corner of this entryway is transformed into a stylish presentation niche for the pair of historic landscapes that have been framed to match a treasured heirloom hall table. Tabletop lamps in brushed metal and with elongated bodies provide gentle task lighting while complementing the intricate carving found on the tables legs and doors. Framed family photos give an immediate welcome to visitors, as if saying: come get to know our family better.

2009 - 2010 home garden design - Driveways, Walkways - The Path More Traveled

Pathways can intrigue, lead, encourage exploration, or simply provide an escape from the every day. But one thing for sure, they are as varied and unique as the individuals who walk them.

A study in tranquil simplicity, white slate leads the curious across a pond dotted with stone boulders and tropical greenery. Be sure to bring an offering - even if it's just an open, guileless heart - to appease the two Buddha-head guardians. Then take a deep breath and step across the threshold to discover what lies inside the pavilion beyond the low stone wall.

Shaped like a keystone entry, this brick pathway draws color inspiration from the house it leads to. Meticulously balanced with greenery and flowers along each edge, palm trees in the centre garden bed create a sense of mystery by partially concealing your ultimate destination. Or perhaps they are simply telling anyone who walks this road to leave the outside world behind and concentrate on the beauty found within.

Perfect for strolling with your significant other, this winding pathway is marked by boulders and indirect lighting. Variegated stones in a crazy paving pattern give a rich texture with an almost childlike sense of playfulness and magic. If you watch closely and respectfully, perhaps you'll catch a glimpse of sprites or pixies dancing under moonlight on the lawn beyond.

2009 - 2010 home garden design - Driveways, Walkways - Lead Me Along the Garden Pathway

Hop, skip, and jump. Irregular stepping stones introduce a playful sense of pure joie de vivre to this luxuriously thick, manicured lawn - their dark colour picked up by a park bench casually placed for maximum enjoyment of sunsets or quiet time with a novel. And perhaps, if you're very quiet at night, you might see the pixies dance at the bottom of this pathway just where it leads into the surrounding forest.

A study in angular beauty and rhythm, this pathway presents a subtle ambiance of mystery. At first, it appears all business - everything carefully placed in its predetermined pattern. But then, curiosity touches your imagination. What could lie beyond? What wonders are to be found inside? The only way to know is to knock on the door and enter.

East meets west with a hint of Mediterranean warmth. The roofline draws inspiration from the simplicity of an Asian pagoda and becomes an elegant frame for the azure waters in the distance. As shadows dance across light terra cotta walls, a gentle breeze ruffles your hair - almost as soft and cooling as the one on board the sailboat you'll be boarding this afternoon.
