Create a multi-functional family kitchen space with a romantic theme. Italian designs and frescos cover the revamped kitchen

2009-2010 Sample home design style-Romantic Kitchen

    Utilise all available space
Streamline the space in your kitchen by lining up the units along one wall. Make sure that the cooker, sink and fridge are easily accessible. Are you utilising all your space to its full purpose.

    Kitchen units

Hand-paint the doors of your units.
Start by priming the doors with a malamine or laminate primer. Using either artists oil paints or acrylics, paint the design of your choice. Coat the finished doors with several layers of varnish to make the image durable.

    Cupboard doors

Bring the window architecture into the design
Add curved arches to the top of your windows to enhance the romantic feel of the room. If you have radiators under your windows, why not convert them into attractive window seats.

    Windows

Let as much light into the room as possible
Light is important in any room of the house, especially the kitchen. Open up the area in your room and where possible enlarge the windows. This will let the light in and enable you to enjoy views of the outside world.

    Natural light

Fresco your walls with romantic images.
Photocopy your images onto lazertran paper. Soak in water for a few minutes, until the image becomes a transfer. Then carefully place the transfer onto the walls. Colour wash with watered down emulsion for a faded fresco feel.

    Walls

Bring the ceiling into the design
To give a room a coherent feel, make sure the ceiling is consistent and blends in with the rest of the room. A wooden tongue and groove ceiling works well and once painted cream, fuses the design together.

    Ceiling

Use romantic accessories to enhance the design
To complete the romantic look, position a delicate chandelier in the centre of the room. A light feminine chandelier with a leafy design works especially well in this romantic room. Use soft fabrics and tapestries to give the room a rich opulent feel.

It's one of the chores we love to hate. But having an efficient, beautiful workspace can make even doing laundry a more pleasant activity.

There's a casual elegance to this carefully planned laundry room. Richly stained, natural wood cabinetry provides plenty of drawers and shelving to tuck away everything you need for scrubbing up with ease. Checkered floor tiling, wicker storage baskets, and a stylized pears-and-apricots painting add a nostalgic counterpoint to the contemporary, front-load appliances. No skimping on soaking space either – this country-style sink with its wide front apron and wall-mount facets could double as a bathtub for Rover.

At last, a laundry tub with a sassy outlook and an outside view. Extending the patterned backsplash around the window transforms what could be simply another sink into a visual feature. Two paintings of sunny lands give a warmth and balance the display of aquamarine soap to the left. Millwork is light to maintain an airy, open feeling.

Rich and luxurious with a distinctly contemporary elegance, this laundry has a soothing, tranquil ambiance. Walls echo the dark, natural green of grasses and vases filled with palm fronds. Cabinetry is smooth with no pulls or knobs to detract from its functional simplicity. An undermounted sink combines good looks with easy clean up.

Think efficient and fun when you step into this laundry room. Framed by an arched doorway, the oversized porthole window with cross-hatching is topped with a reminder of the much loved, homespun truth that a stitch in time saves nine. And just in case you need more proof, settle yourself down at the fully restored treadle sewing machine and whip up a few hems and pleats.

No doubt occasionally serving double duty as a bath for the family's four-footed members, this laundry's country-style apron sink sports wall mount faucets plus lots of surrounding work surface for sorting, folding, or de-mudding everything from galoshes to flower pots - perfect for a multi tasking master.

But despite its rural, country charm, when it comes right down to it, this laundry is all about contemporary efficiency. A sleek front load washer/dryer team conserve both energy and water. Cleaning supplies tuck neatly out of sight in banks of cabinetry, and the flooring is a hardworking, durable tile that combines easy care with good looks. Getting clean was never more enjoyable.
